In the first grade William Goodman often got in trouble for drawing little creatures when he should have been listening, thus causing his teacher to write on his report card, “The drawing in class has got to stop!” This originality continued at home where he pasted cut out images on every inch of the four walls of his bedroom, thereby launching a creative process which is in many ways similar to what he still conjures on canvases today with acrylic mediums and bold paint. Formal training at North Carolina School of the Arts and years of self exploration quickly propelled William into the art world. Ten years later, his exhibits have crossed the United States and have been shown in galleries in New York City; Chicago; Washington, D.C.; Little Rock, Arkansas; New Orleans;La Jolla,Ca and in his hometown of Jackson, Mississippi.
William’s inspirations mirror modern culture and reflect his raw fascination with the past. Life experiences dominate the dramatic work that he produces today. “My art uploads fragments of my life. My experiences all come together unleashing raw emotion on the canvas like an intertwined web,” William explained.
Influences for William’s original work include artists Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Ralph Steadman,and Jasper Johns. The constant evolution of an every-changing fashion industry, obscure electronic music, and film noir all influence William’s unique paintings. When traveling to European countries, the Carribean, and major metropolitan U.S. cities, William untiringly shoots thousands of photographs, thus creating an archive of images which he later uses to piece together the final product for a painting. Living in Paris in the fall of 2007, pushed his art to a new level, greatly enriching his perception. William personally selects and photographs all of his male and female models who are intimately meshed into his graphic paintings.
In addition to his mixed media works, William also creates minimal abstract paintings in which some of the same raw emotions seen in the imagery paintings still exist but without the graphic nature. Often likened to a spiritual inspiration, the abstracts draw the viewer into a tranquil world, both peaceful and evocative.
“My pieces go through a number of processes before the work is complete. Everything begins with an initial image as I work from my illustrations to hand collages, from my photographs to digital compositions– they make their way into my studio with the final product traveling its way onto a canvas using various processes and acrylic paint. My images are often veiled illusions which echo deep layers of my own life experience, both positive and negative. My art changes periodically as I unwrap experiences embedded in my own soul. My paintings simultaneously evoke a conscious, as well as subconscious, reaction from viewer.”
William’s work was selected and published in the national publication “New American Paintings” in 2008 and again in 2009.William was also featured in the nation publication Blue Canvas in 2010. In addition, his work is held in prominent United States collections, including the offices of the worldwide Viking Range Corporation,McDonalds,BankPlus,Butler Snow,Watkins Ludlam,Parkway Properties, as well as the collection of National Football League Star Eli Manning.
