Impressive overview of how much you have honed your skill....fantastic...inspiring

Cheers carminnie! It is strange how we all perceive things so differently, you say "honed your skill" and my first thought was "are you kidding?" lol all I see are faults and where I could have done better ...but then as artists I'm sure we are all the same ...lol ...insecure, neurotic etc. Thanks for stopping by :)

The beauty of pencil and charcoal is that it is a forgiving medium......and why I choose personally to focus on it alone as it allows those added changes ...the ones we see as faults that later turn into a passage to positive change......aha! a "lemonade moment"

Forgiving to an extent, there are times when I've gone hell for leather indenting leads into paper only to find I shouldn't have and then no amount of erasing will shift it! But on the whole I agree, its a very fix as you go medium

I recently discovered the Kohinoor Electric Rechargeable Eraser......really fantastic product. I was always using other types of erasers but I found this actually lifts a lot out of the paper without damaging the surface. I like to work with the "ghosting grays" anyway and to imbed layers of charcoal...but for pure whites I leave the paper untouched and light light grays I use the new eraser!

Hi to both of you! rebecca sorry but I think the word "honed" perfectly applies in your case because the imperfections somhow became essential to make the entire drawing technique spontaneous and expressive...those imperfections somhow enhanced the beauty in everything and I find that so true and real even in my 3-minute sketches..somehow those accidental strokes became essential element to consequently define the form...I love doodling to start my portraits..unmindful of the unnecessary strokes...but in the end they practically completes the expressive face...LOL..so I guess, we artists do magnify our weaknesses yet it sublimely appreciated when elevated to be part of beauty...amazing reality!

my sentiments exactly!!! ...but then there is this little nagging voice at the back of my brain wishing I could master painting and understand colour ...I am getting better and it doesn't scare me half as much as it used to! :) Thanks :)

Well......met a painter today who said all the black in white is a necessary part of learning color ....value.....but in my final analysis, color is not necessarily the means to best express emotion when movement, texture, dramatic light and shadow can cover it ......LOL :)
|
|
rebeccasimmonds
Replied: December 08, 2009
Arr... but here the "experts" (whoever they might be) would disagree and say that emotion is better represented by colour and logic better represented by black and white. LOL I like the painter you met today ...he talks sense ...it helps me justify my love of drawing! :)
|
|
katherinenelson
Replied: December 08, 2009
LOL! ah....it actually was a woman who told me that! Yes, I think the two approaches can play off of each other and further strengthen all work as a whole. I must just be logical -mathematical in compositional balance....but emotional in my almost nonexistant color! I enjoy both your paintings and drawings. I know my sister would love the elephant!
