Pedro Carta, also know as 'Pey', was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1979. His artistic career did not start in the fine arts, but as a graphic designer for Conde Nast Publications where he worked as a layout artist for Vogue, GQ, and Conde Nast Traveler magazine in Madrid, Spain.
However, Pey's passion has always been painting. Since his days in high school at the American School of Madrid to attending a handful of courses at the New York Academy of Arts a few years ago.
Pey views his art as a creative process only capable of being created in the present moment. He does not plan ahead on what to paint, but it is only through the moment of doing, that creativity can manifest itself. Therefore, the core of the work is very abstract but injected by technical tools that reference reality and visual composition.
Pey's most recognized work is the ' Curry Series'. A trio of three paintings titled 'Spice', 'Green' and 'Flow', which are all created using mostly curry powder and herbs.
His work is highly influenced by music, specifically the post punk era of the late 80's through the grunge movement of the 90's.
Pey's art also reflects the influences of the 'urban propaganda' movement of street art perfected by artists such as Banksy and Shepard Fairey, as well as of the illustrations of film director Tim Burton and the art work of Brandon Boyd; lead singer of the California based band Incubus.
His other passions include traveling back to San Francisco, CA (which he considers home), surfing and beach bumming, longboarding the streets of Manhattan, and the generous happy hour(s) of his favorite bars in the Lower East Side and East Village.
