Artists constantly search for inspiration, a moment from life that explodes into an uncontrollable surge of creative energy. “Catalyst: A Group Art Show,” on display at Bar Basic on June 26, exhibits the works of urban artists who successfully harness their individual artistic catalysts.
Local artist Matthew Land’s work skillfully blends aspects of abstract expressionism, surrealism, folk, pop, and realism. His paintings create a complex and mysterious atmosphere, which leaves the message to be determined by the viewer. He combines the use of layered textures with detailed painted figures culminating in a distinctive technique. Blends are achieved through the removal of paint as well as the addition of paint giving each piece an antiqued charm.
Suzanne Frie enjoys a variety of different subjects and styles from pop art to impressionism, digital design to mixed media. Her signature pop figures, “The Angry Navy Chief,” “The Drill Instructor” and “Hey Shipmate!,” are inspired by the artist's husband, a U.S. Navy Submariner. These images carry humorous speech bubbles quoting funny comments shared between military men on their daily workdays. Aside from these comic military themed works the artist uses a 'Paper Painting' process which comprises of layered tissue paper on wooden frames. These images range from picturesque boats in harbors, oceans and rocks, fields of sunflowers and little girls with Chinese umbrellas.
Another local artist exhibiting is graphic designer and illustrator Hill Young. The artist finds inspiration in organic forms, bright colors, and contrasting themes of work. Young frequently portrays birds or wings in her fine art and design, as she finds exceptional beauty in them. Currently she is pursuing new works for illustration with surrealism and realism. Fusing fine art with her passion for design, she creates extremely unique pieces.
Some of the other artists exhibiting include Melissa Manalad, Omayma Baling, Michelle Ferrera, Alex Avila, Tia Vamp, Rod Mojica and Patrick Seibt. There will also be Live Art and Live Music.
The opening starts at 7pm and runs until 12am on Tuesday June 26. Bar Basic is located at 410 Tenth Avenue in downtown, San Diego. There is no dress code and no cover. However, you must be at least 21 years old to attend.
