SAN DIEGO, CA - Stealing parts from multiple animals, Chimera becomes a one of a kind, mythical and monstrous creature. “CHIMERA: A Group Art Exhibition” at Mosaic Wine Bar on Saturday May 4, exhibits works by urban artists who also divide and then merge elements from life revealing original forms in their artwork. Art has been a major part of Mark Richmond's life since he was young. He earned a degree in fine arts and minored in multicultural study, which his art reflects. His style, as he puts it, combines "ancient Japanese tattoo art, with a modern multicultural approach". Mark creates uniquely blended calligraphic lettering for his paintings influenced by graffiti art and with a combination of computer and hand-made methods. His 25 ft painting is viewed by thousands of people daily at the San Diego International Airport. This piece well represents his unique and multicultural approach to art. The Japanese influenced painting graphically depicts a scene with koi fish and white heron, also made by hand and computer. Another artist participating in “CHIMERA” is Brian Dombrowsky. Politics and religion are clear influences and subject matter in his art. Many of his paintings creatively critique and satirize the state of our country and in particular, the major political parties, the left and the right, Democrats and Republicans. One such painting of his from a few years back, aptly titled "What's Left", depicts a melting American flag in the background with a (Leftist) donkey standing precariously on a too small white star. His creative use of wordplay and strong compositions create one-of-a-kind political and religious statements that engage the viewer both visually and politically, and in many cases, probably argumentatively. One measure of the greatness of a piece of art is if it illicits emotions in the viewer; Brian Dombrowsky has certainly succeeded in this degree. Look for more creative and engaging pieces by Brian Dombrowsky, Mark Richmond and fellow artists Rod Mojica, Aaron Moore, Paul Naylor, Kristen Argerake and more, at “CHIMERA: A Group Art Exhibition.” The opening reception begins at 6pm and runs until 11pm on Saturday May 4, at Mosaic Wine Bar. The exhibition will run for a month. Mosaic is located at 3422 30th Street, San Diego. The show is free and open to the public, ages 21+.
