SAN DIEGO, CA – Bringing the once street bound tool into the gallery space, graffiti-born stencil art takes on a new life. Thumbprint Gallery’s second edition of “OVERSPRAY II: A Stencil Art Show,” at BASIC on April 17, continues to exhibit the diverse possibilities of stencil art, combining the traditional graffiti technique with contemporary artistic elements. A prominent artist featured in this exhibition is Acamonchi, who has integrated the techniques of street art into both fine art and graphic design. A renowned figure for establishing a critical forum on the Mexican streets, he is hugely influential amongst a new generation of urban artists. Having worked for big brands such as MTV and Pepsi, he also endeavors to “create graphic works of art that probe serious political and cultural issues.” His recent work utilizes the stencil technique to create densely layered panels whilst incorporating his signature street graphics. This unique collaboration of styles succeeds in producing fresh and thought-provoking art. Also exhibiting is local artist William Bucher, currently represented by Thumbprint Gallery. His work focuses on the beauty of street art techniques and merges the immediacy of graffiti together with the aesthetics of fine art. Drawing his influence from strong political figures such as Nelson Mandela and Gandhi, as well as comic book figures, the artist works with spray paint and multiple hand cut stencils, which dictates the spontaneous structure of each work. Some of the other artists exhibiting include Fluidpusher45, Grandlarsen, Keemowerks, Michael Mahaffey and Patrick Seibt. There will also be entertainment by live DJs Johnny Tran and Terry James and live music from Afrojaziacs. The opening starts at 7pm and runs until 12am on Tuesday April 17. Bar Basic is located at 410 Tenth Avenue in downtown, San Diego. There is no dress code and no cover. However, you must be at least 21 years old to attend.
