I paint, walls. Sometimes buildings. the things I paint are BIG and life sized. I walk a tightrope between artwork and extreme housepainting. I get my art supplies from the hardware store and I haven't touched an easel in years. I might use three or four colors on a roller at one time and have three rollers in use at once.
And I love music. so I listen to music and feel the music and paint to it. the music moves me. Literally and figuratively. Sometimes the melody just forces some part of the scene out of me, and sometimes the words, speak directly to my situation, or present feelings, and it makes everything simple and clear.
It has to move me, though,in some way, or I have no use for it in my brain. Bad music can alternately, seriously screw me up, when other people can somehow just ignore it or laugh it off. So I am very careful with what I put in my ears...
The songwriters and poets I listen to live parallel lives to my own so I take heart in knowing I am not alone in being alone...and in working ridiculously long hours sometimes and just getting by most of the time. And hopefully what I do may soothe or inspire, or just tickle some other restless soul in the way the music saves mine.
This music collection is my most valuable and influential possession... obsession...addiction...inspiration...
Music takes me away from all the worries and meaness and confusion of this world and lets me paint, somewhere off in a world of my own creation. That's how I like to spend my days.
...different worlds, different places, different days, but the process is always the same.
I started drawing when I was young, then switched to painting small, found things, because small found things were FREE.Like rocks and driftwood, and stuff. As I got older the music I found got better and the painting got bigger.. I 'm pretty old now and I paint murals, mostly. They cover the room from floor to ceiling, sometimes the whole building. Sometimes inside, sometimes outside, (depending on the weather). I bring the outside inside, and the inside outside. I've painted wood to look like rock, rock to look like wood, new surfaces to look like old surfaces...I like to upset the status quo, whatever that may be.
I usually use acrylics, either latex housepaint, or artist pigments. Sometimes I paint in UV light with flouerescents, or a mix of the two....I use rollers for most of my work, brushes at the end for detail work. When I turn music on, music takes me ...somewhere...
when I paint/ dance/ sing along, then the walls go away, and the room becomes the place in my head.
in my mind I measure my paintings in those songs.
and the songs are the most important tool I have...
the paint is up there, too.

Amazing work. I'm always in awe of great mural and wall paintings as I can't imagine painting something that large.
|
|
erinthepainter
Replied: July 07, 2010
well, thank you. very much. It wasn't always that large. The more knowledge I accumulated the larger it got.And vica versa I guess. When you go big you get to eliminate a lot of the details because they get lost. The biggest challenge is getting up there, so I have always wished I could fly...

Thanks for taking a look at my work and giving a star to my Body Ledger drawing. I'm forever taking older work out of frames to re-use the frames for newer work. This drawing was safely tucked away -- out of sight. I recently treated myself to a new frame for it, so I could get it back on the wall to enjoy. Most of my drawings were from a 2001 exhibit about survival, transcendence, transformation -- about those life changes that spin us around and make us come out stronger. May your legs and determination take you where you want to go. --- All the best, Jeanne Sturdevant

Thanks Erin. Hey what type of paint do you use for your murals? Whats the best way to prime a brick surface? I'm an elementary school teacher and I want to do something outside with my kids. Thanks in advance for your help.
|
|
erinthepainter
Replied: June 06, 2010
I use exterior, flat if I can get it, latex. are the bricks already painted, or bare? if they are bare, I would not prime it at all. the paint soaks into the pores of the bricks and lasts forever. if you prime it, you fill those pores with plain color and the painting will fade eventually leaving that base. its better to do the actual painting into those pores

thanks. I was an art teacher, too and painted for theater production companies. Just small neighborhood groups that performed in the school I taught in. It gave me a lot of opportunity to paint big and fast. And it also was a good platform for practice, because the plays didn't last too long and soon I would be painting right over the set I just did. It taught me a lot. Mainly it taught me that I love painting this way. I could never go back to painting in a little square again.

thank you, cjames. It is very different to be surrounded by a painting than to view one in a flat space. Not really any planning I just get the paint , and a lift, or a ladder, turn on the music that moves me and start painting. I am usually not aware of what will come out of me. I may have a theme, but I hate to sketch or draw things ...the sketches have nothing to do with my mood, or my vision when I do the actual painting. thanks again, and you have a great day too

thank you blue. In my younger days I used to paint intricate scenes on tiny things...fingernails, even. Then I had an drawing teacher once tell me that if I keep getting smaller I am going to eventually dissappear. So she turned me around in the other direction and now there is no limit...other than the size of the lift.

Hey, thanks for all the stars. I love the murals. I've done a couple of murals myself. I am an elementary school art teacher and have painted 5 or 6 murals in the buildings I've worked in. My best one was all about characters from kids books like The Cat in The Hat and Where the Wild Things Are. It was on a long wall outside the school library. Unfortunately the building that the mural was in was torn down a couple of years ago. But I have pictures. Keep up the good work.
