I paint, walls, ususally or ceilings but BIG and life sized. I am erinthepainter because I sometimes work with and alongside building contractors and in that atmosphere everyone is known for their trade so I got tagged erinthepainter as opposed to erintheplumber or erinthedrywaller... I might consider myself an artist, but I walk a tightrope between artwork and extreme housepainting. I get my art supplies from the hardware store and I haven't touched an easel in years. But I might use three or four colors on a roller at one time and have three rollers in use at once. (roller ninja?)
In an arena of artists, "thepainter" may seem redundant or self righteous, to be but is not at all intended that way. It's all I got.
And I love music. so I listen to music and paint to it. the music moves me. Literally and figuratively. Sometimes the melody just forces some part of the scene out of me, and sometimes the words, speak directly to my situation, or present feelings, and it makes everything so simple and clear. It has to move me, though,in some way, or I have no use for it in my brain. Bad music can alternately, seriously screw me up, when others can somehow just ignore it or laugh it off. So I have to be careful with what I put in my ears...
The songwriters and poets I listen to live parallel lives to my own so I take heart in knowing I am not alone in being alone...and getting by on getting by. And hopefully what I do may soothe some other tortured soul in the way the music soothes mine. So my music collection is my most valuable and influential possession... obsession...addiction...inspiration.
The music takes me away from all the worries and meaness and confusion of my world and lets me paint, somewhere off in a world of my own creation. That's how I spend my days.
...different worlds, different places, different days, but the process is always the same.
I started drawing as a kid, then switched to painting small found things, because found things were free. But then the painting got bigger and the music got better and I got older. Well, I 'm pretty old now so I paint murals, mostly. They cover the room from floor to ceiling, sometimes the whole building. Sometimes inside, sometimes outside, (depending on the weather). I bring the outside inside, and the inside outside. I've painted wood to look like rock, rock to look like wood, new surfaces to look like old surfaces...I like to upset the status quo, whatever that may be.
I usually use acrylics, either latex housepaint, or artist pigments. Sometimes I paint in UV light with flourescents, or a mix of the two....I use rollers for most of my work, brushes at the end for detail work.
Turn music on, music takes me ...somewhere...
when I paint/ dance/ sing along, then the walls go away, and the room becomes the place in my head.
in my mind I measure my paintings in those songs.
and cds full of songs are the most important tool I carry...
the paint is up there, too.

Hi Erin! Thanks for your comments on my artwork. I browsed a little bit through your gallery and I am amazed. I think your house must be some kind of artistic paradise. Keep up that great work.

thank you , shantideva. when I had a house, it was full of half finished things. I would try something to see if it worked then abandon it ,and go do it somewhere else. now, though, the world is my house

thank you for noticing... most of the paintings, or at least the section of the paintings you see were done in day or two.
I have been at this for a lot of days...

thank you so much! and you should paint your house. think of it as a practice canvas. It cost only pennies to roll over what you don't like . You can do another painting every day till you get the one you want. It is so liberating to paint big as compared to fitting everything into a little box (the canvas).
Once I broke free, I don't go back to the box very often.
