Thank you for the stars! Your background is very inspirational and I found what I'm guessing must be more recent work, (the more "abstract" pieces) very original. You seem to be finding your voice. Please, keep painting! Dean

Thank you Dean. I have a lot more new ones. Just haven't posted them yet.

Edwin, I find a real personal quality to your art, some of your landscapes almost look 3-d, and I specially like your profile picture, puts me in the mood for some largemouth bass fishin' this weekend. You are moving in the right direction with your work, keep going!
edwinlong Replied: July 19, 2010
Thank you varasart. That was very kind of you.
davecoleman  Posted: July 13, 2010
Edwin, I like the "primitive" quality that seems to define your work so far. It has the "Outsider Art" look about it. However, your compositions demonstrate an instinctive understanding of the elements and principles of design.
edwinlong Replied: July 13, 2010
Thank you Dave. That was very distinctive of what I'm trying to represent. I've never had any trainging so it just comes natural to me. I don't copy anything or anyone's work. It is just what I see in my imagination. Thanks for responding with pinpoint accuracy and much passion. I wish you well on this site.

Thank you so much Leslie June. Iam just now finishing up apiece I've never tackled before for a comission.
lizzybaby  Posted: July 09, 2010
Well like I said, I am open to an honest and constructive critique. Even a "like" or "not like" has value if they give some reasoning. Oh and let me correct something. I meant that some abstract art that I see on art sites look like they were done by a little kid, sloppy and no focus. But I agree that you should enjoy painting and that feeling usually comes out in the final product. I try to be open minded and be willing to learn new things and take suggestions with my art. In the end I will make the decision as to change it or not. I would like to get into cubism a bit as I am really intrigued by it. Most of my paintings have been pretty much the same style and I need to branch out a bit. What are you working on now?
edwinlong Replied: July 10, 2010
That is a good question Lizzy. I'm presently working on a comission painting that someone asked me to do. He wanted a painting of a large mouth bass, however I can't just paint one little thing without incorporating it into a river bass with a whole river scene and a fisherman in a bass boat casting to the big mouth guy. I'm doing something unusual to me this time. I've painted the scene and the bass, but this time I'm adding a real lure and real fishing line from the fishing pole to the lure as if it is being cast from the boat. Kind of mixed media. If it doen't have live in the painting I have a hard time representing it. I try to make my oil paintings full of color and life. I will be posting it on here once I complete it before I give it to him.
lizzybaby Replied: July 10, 2010
Oh, so it's a painting with actual real items on it. Intersting. I saw a video today on reverse perspective animation (http://vimeo.com/12518619 ). It made me think a bit. When I read about your comission for a large mouth bass and you mentioned a river and fisherman, I immediately thought of having the bass in the boat with the fishing pole trying to catch the fisherman in the water. I saw a comic once where the fish were in the water tring to catch the fisherman in the boat. The fish had poles with a can of beer on the end of the line for bait. For me, a friends birthday is coming up later this month and I was thinking of painting her a birthday card painting. She is from Burma and I wanted to do the "happy birthday" part in her language. Or maybe just give her one of my paintings and paint the happy birthday part on it. Not sure yet. Good luck with your painting. I'll look for it.
edwinlong Replied: July 12, 2010
I love the concept of reverse ideas. Not this one I did but what a neat thought. Might even try it.
lizzybaby  Posted: July 06, 2010
I see your point again. I made the mistake of posting a few of my work on Craigslist arts message board. People there are art snobs who fawned over someone posting a picture of a barn roof and other uninteresting and common scenes. Some liked my art but others severely critisized it without really even saying why exept for "no history" and "not inspiring". I put a lot of time and effort into my paintings and they are a different type of abstract than most of what I see. Lotsof stuff looks like it was done by a little kid. But like I said, I am learning and open to honest and objective critisizm. I try and use lots of colors instead of drab tones. Yours have lots of color and the scenes are fresh, uncomplicated and majestic. I see losts of art that is negetive or depressing to look at. Not the kind of stuff I would want to hang on my wall and look at every day. Yours I would. I have about 20 finished paintings but need to take better pictures of most of them. I'll post another but bear in mind it is a not so hot picture but you can get the idea.
edwinlong Replied: July 09, 2010
Let me say Lizzy. It isn't what others think of your art that makes you an artist. It's what you think of your art. I stop critics from doing that with my art. You see abstract art is confusing to people who have no vision. They just can't see it and they are cruel. Craiglist is an open door for kick me while I'm down. First get your appreciation from the relaxing of your painting and then come to other artists of like mind and share your heart with them. One painting can change you whole life and how you see things. Never let critics rule what you do. They can't be happy unless they are critisizing someone. That's why their critics. As far as your art looking like it was done by a kid......good for you. You can still express the kid in your heart on canvas. People live their whole life trying to capture that emotion. I'm happy for you and I'm glad to be your friend. Don't be so open for critisizm. You don't need to be critisized or your work. It only stunts your ability. Look for like minded people like me on this site who feel the passion you express. I'm proud of you Lizzy.
lizzybaby  Posted: July 05, 2010
I get what you mean. I am much more into painting as digital seems a bit artificial and fake somehow. Non traditional I guess and less skill also. I can look at a digital creation and think "wow that would be a great painting", or when I find out a piece is digital instead of a painting I'm a bit dissapointed. Most of my paintings are abstract and some folks have said they look like lowbrow art. A couple of sports logos and some spaceart also I have done. Sometimes I can do an abstract painting, then after a while look at it and see something different in it other than I intended. But I'm still learning. I'll try and post a few more soon. Have a good day.
edwinlong Replied: July 06, 2010
That's great Lizzy. Somehow in the midst you've found the answer. Art isn't real until it moves you in a natural way. I've never been much for the digital age and what I've done myself I see as tolerant. However when you can look at your own work and see more than meets the eye you have accomplished more than you know. I see in multiples when I paint, but sometimes others just see one thing. Every now and again someone will come to me and say they see something else in it. I miss it sometimes too. But this I know..... all abstract art has a variety in it. Not only do you see the obvious but the secret things too. It's kinda like looking at the sky and seeing differenti images in the same sky and clouds. The artist sees more than others. Most people won't look at it or even look up, but if you look long enough it moves to your wave legnths. You might be learning but I think you are learning that you have more emotion than you think. I guess the best word would be passion.
lizzybaby  Posted: July 03, 2010
I really like STILL NIGHT. I uploaded a couple more. These 2 are paintings as all of mine are except that first one which I made some digital alteration with. But normally I don't do that. This is my first day here so I am trying to get a feel for this place. Looks good so far.
edwinlong Replied: July 05, 2010
Go slow and take a good notice at what is original and done naturally. It is easy to alter the original, however the old masters spent their whole life creating the original. You'll find the balance yourself. Still night actually was painted by just trying to create a night scene with snow. I didn't know that it looks like Crater Lake in Colorado (I believe). All of my paintings do not have a representation of a place. They are created by my strokes. It just happens that they resemble another place on the earth. I've never been to any of the places I've painted or seen a picture of them. It goes to show you that a natural creation is imminent. It is a creation for me and a reminder for others. Thanks for sharing. Keep on browsing and look for the natural.
lizzybaby  Posted: July 03, 2010
Hey I really like some of your paintings. All they all paintings or are some digital?
edwinlong Replied: July 03, 2010
The Atomic Firefly ones are digitally made from pictures I took. Everything else is oil paintings by my hand the old master's way. I'm really glad you like them. That means a lot to me.

Cooprewood, that alone with what you just said gave me a charge in the spirit. It's not what life does to us that defines us. It's how we master the life we are dealt. Fod me, the canvas gives me the compassion to open those doors that are hidden by so many people. Bless you.

Well done Sir. If I can ask... what's the significance of the dragonflies?
edwinlong Replied: November 28, 2009
Very good question my friend. I came up with the idea because of the worldwide threats about nucleur weapons. It's my way of showing how a simple Firefly could take down such a threat. In other words, it's really that easy. It takes away the fear from people when they see it. My way of comforting the world. Thanks for the question though. You are paying attention. We all need to believe that some superhero is out there working for us. This is mine.
