Arachne is a mortal who was a skilled weaver in Greek mythology who upset Athena, the goddess of wisdom, by disrespecting the gods. Athena & Arachne had a weaving contest, and though the goddess was more skilled, Arachne's ego displeased the goddess. Athena was so angry that she turned Arachne into a spider! It is from this myth that we get the word - arachnid.
