I also have no formal painting training - I learn mainly from observation, and also reading up on others' techniques; I believe a grounding in understanding form and how color works spatially are essential (at least for me), so that may well be worth looking at for you also - I did a lot of drawing at art school prior to picking up a paintbrush, which I'd highly recommend for any figurative artist , simply as a quick means of training ones' hand/eye coordination ;) Cheers!
