The Ulimate Vs
March 30, 2012
In a rather…contemplative mood tonight. In every story there requires not just great heroes but great villains as well. The hero generally stays the same while the villains are taken out one at a time. Yeah yeah, we all know that. But there’s always one true nemesis, one ultimate arch enemy that makes all others pale in comparison. So, that got me thinking. What are the ultimate matchups in the stories we all know and love? I’m not just talking books here, but stories in general. Here are a few that easily come to my mind when I think of ultimate showdowns.
Sherlock Holmes vs. James Moriarty
Peter Parker/Spiderman vs. Green Goblin/Norman Osbourne
Bruce Wayne/Batman vs. Joker
James T. Kirk vs. Khan Noonien Singh
Gravity vs. Inertia
Gamma Radiation vs. Lead
The Rebel Alliance vs. The Galactic Empire
Sigourney Weaver vs. ….pretty much all the Aliens
Potato vs. Potato
Matter vs. Antimatter
Oil vs. Water
Ahab vs. The White Whale
The Federation vs. The Borg
The Dr. vs. The Daleks
Acids vs. Bases
Uppers vs. Downers
Snails vs. Salt
Y’all vs. Ya’ll
This vs. That
This catalog of epic opposition is by no means all-inclusive. Thanks for playing ;)

Superman Vs. Lex Luther?? Ultimately, considering that I am ALWAYS my own worst enemy, I'd say me vs me. Love the game!

I was talking recently, to a 7 year old boy who launched into a detailed description of his "Arch Enemy"(capitals seem imperative here). I really got the impression that thinking of this other kid, obviously a class bully, as an Arch Enemy, allowed him to add a bit of flare to an otherwise awful situation. There is something... romantic about nemeses... like the shadow side of a love story, with a different kind of chemistry...

The human spirit always seeks to imbue romance, even into the darkest moments. It has always seemed to me

To be one of the most common and basic defense mechanisms as well as expressions of hope and expectations.
