WORDS IN MY HEAD (A poem)

Words,
The heart
Of communicating,
The glue that holds
Us together.

And yet ...

How easy it is
To misunderstand,
To distort,
To manipulate,
To confuse,
To use words
Against one another.

Do we hear?
Do we listen?
Are we heard?

Words,
Simple constructs,
Lines and squiggles,
Meaningless sounds given
Weight.

Every day we are inundated...

Everyone competing
To be heard,
Crying for understanding,
For attention,
For compassion,
For a moment
Of your time.

Do we hear?
Do we listen?
Are we heard?

Or do we push the 'on' button,
Pump-up the volume,
Change the channel,
Get connected,
Caught in the Web.

Is there even a moment of silence?..

Words on the screen,
Swimming before our eyes,
Words filling
The room,
our head,
our hearts,
Our dreams.

Do you hear me?
Do you listen?
Am I heard?

I love this poem, ----your words---- are so meaningful, so impressed w/your awareness and ability to connect your words with your visual art.

Thank you so much for your support! lately, I find my poetry is really informing my visual art, the two are becoming one.

Lovely work Fred. I especially like the bit "Words,
Simple constructs,
lines and squiggles,
Meaningless sounds given
Weight.

Bother..... BC does some of the oddest things with formatting. I also meant to say that the quoted paragraph expresses so finely the way I feel about words.

This seems so relevant to the conversations we were having in our FA forums - words are so very important, so symbolic and mean so much more than we realize. I love this poem Fred...so much to think about. And I have to get into your forum today - I read your response to Alli's question and I want to further that discussion. You just get better all the time in every way imaginable Fred - you are truly blossoming as a poet.

Your words about words really strike at the heart of the matter. I often wonder, withtout words, who are we? Without language do we exist?

Posted by frederiqueroy70 on February 26, 2012

Thanks Ray! "Without language do we exist?" Darn! I wish I had written that in my poem! :))

Posted by ramonfernandez on February 26, 2012

Without language are we conscious?

Who am "I" without "I"?

Posted by ramonfernandez on February 26, 2012

I suppose I am just ___ without I

Interesting write, Fred. Ive been thinking lately about the lack of silence, and how it muddles our thoughts and then how we respond or do not respond to life and people in it. Thank you for this-- kicked me back into seeking that silence again. xxx

Thank you Maureen! I've been thinking a lot about my "Finding my Voice" scans, trying to get to the heart of what I'm trying to convey. But certainly silence seems increasingly like a hard to find commodity.

sometimes its really hard when there are so many distractions - any place you can go where there is only silence? (not man-made noise?)

In your own mind via meditation, I guess :) Hope you're well sweetie!

Yes, Fred, reminds of the poem I wrote, "A Good Cup of Conversation". We all want to be heard don't we? I know I do and appreciated. Isn't that a human stable? Just like air and water and rest for the body, the emotions I think are left bankrupt sometimes in this fast past society. Great image to pair with the writing!
