Kaa
February 12, 2012
If I think back
There were some signals
Like unconnected dots
Now forming into shape
Too fast
This shape shows up
As out of nothing
Slithering and sliding
Uttering sneaky sneers
Provoking
I look into its eyes
My words disintegrate
Gasping for air
The floor under my feet
Is where?
A million fears pop up
Each fighting for attention
My head starts spinning
I want to run and look
Away
Then I remember
How strong I've grown
And whatever slithers by
Is open for evaluation
Mine that is
So I choose to stay
I choose to look back
To examine and dismantle
And respectfully disregard
I choose me
Most of you will know that Kaa is the name of the snake in Jungle Book. He hypnotizes his prey and then eats it.
But Shere Khan, the tiger, pulls him out of the tree he's in and makes him tremble with fear. My Chinese sign is Tiger ;
Actually this came up when I was at the therapist with my son Tommes (10). We were discussing his anxieties for monsters and she suggested he could freeze them.
'Ah', my goldnugget said, 'and then I take a hammer ....' Smart kid ;-)
This poem does NOT mean that I don't like snakes, I think they are very very intruiging creatures of Mother Nature.

Wonderful piece. I love how personal you have made it. And yes, you Tommes is a brilliant little thing.

I've never been afraid of snakes and while most people associate them with evil or sneakiness, etc., I agree with Fred and your own comment too that symbolically the snake has many more positive and intriguing meanings including - as you mentioned - the kundalini meaning of the energy of pure desire (not necessarily sexual). I think one of the most profound meanings is of transformation and rebirth which seems very appropriate with regard to this poem - this kind of growth and self-affirmation is incredibly analogous! Wonderful writing dear Miek...powerful and full of insight. And a great image too!

Thanks a million Lianne! xoxox I never used to know people who have snakes in their homes as pets, but I even touched one recently! That was soooo wow! I find that you always bump into these totem animals, you just have to watch closely, like you have to watch for 'coincidences' ... Thanks again dear friend !

Love what Ray wrote down there! Yes, a heartfelt piece about self affirmation. Good for you! In some myths, a snake bite can be a cure.... hmmm...

A cure ... hmmm.... There is a lot to say about 'the snake' as a totem and it is not only about transformation ;-) It's about 'learning' to 'attack', Kundalini and lots of other interesting stuf. Still working on all of them, ha ha.

Great writing Miek. Proof of your own self discovery and the affirmation we CAN make a choice.
