Improving upon one's self

Like a lot of artist out there I love the power of expression and creativity. I remember always going to buy the next best pencil set or that arches cold press paper thats 50 bucks right? Then along came the digital medium with ease of making texture and pencil strokes for that matter brush strokes that react like it were canvas, but with that efficient convenience come the learning curve. I have been using Photoshop since 2006, I have had my ups and most certainly downs, especially being self taught for 3 of those 4 years. So how do you go on to become a better artist? Well, for me it is the pursuit of acedemics in the Fine Arts, for others it is a combination of many things such as workshops in conjunction with school. What about the home artist that does not have access to those services? I suppose it is in the study, the study and inspiration that made us all want to be artists in the first place. I am always looking to be better, in technical, creative, and conceptual ways.

About photoshop........when can you draw that fine line of using photoshop as a main tool for art? As a digital canvas? I use photoshop as a TOOL to create watercolor paintings. First I take a picture of interest , that could be anything really. Then I use photoshop to print out the picture as a watercolor, print it out in both watercolor and black and white as a value guide. Then , I actually paint the way the photoshop sees it. It actually is helping me grow as a watercolor artist. I do not think photoshop is meant to be used as art alone , to me , it can be very beautiful work, but it looses the soul of the artist, the real creativity, but photoshop is a serious tool like the paint brush to MAKE art. Some modern artist get the concept of using photoshop as a tool , and yet still use the imagination to create something . That is the soul of art. As far as art classes I attend a local art club and its low cost classes a few times a month that also helps me grow as a artist. There are also allot of online art classes that can be taken for as low as 150 a class.
