I BELEIVE in the integrity of realism. It is unrelenting.
A HUNDRED YEARS AGO, the dogma of the French and Royal Academies was overthrown by the emerging ideology of conceptualism, inspired in part by Marcel Duchamp's "Urinal" at the Armory Show of 1917. And so collapsed the heirarchy of genres and its rules for the still life, landscape and portrait. Skill-piority art was replaced by concept-priority art and artists have been influenced by this art movement ever since.
MY WORK is decidedly a rebellious question regarding what we left behind. It is also a curious attachment to what we have learned about alternative methods.
I ADMIRE the proficiency of Dutch still life painters and the ideals of the Hudson River School. I respect the modern theories of color, composition and design. While I have a fine art degree, a Master's in Art Education and serious years as a maker of images, my goal as an artist is to understand where my art fits in, AND THEN DETATCH myself from art history, theory and rhetoric in an attempt to make images that resonate with personal fascination on my journey as a painter.
Thank you for the star, Brenda.
