Roma plastilina or just regualr clay? What did you use for the armature & core?

roma #3 plumber's pipes, thick sculptor's aluminum wire -entwined to form thickness, insulation foam sprayed over pipes
Do you typically start with a maquette at a smaller scale, or just go for the full size?
I wish I was that careful. Actually if the model looks impressive I figure the sculpture will. If there's a group we vote. Votes are surprisingly accurate on what looks good.
