Description: An old woman beggar in Virupaksha Temple holds her donated coin to her head in thanks to this child tourist who is learning early about poverty in India. I commend the parents of this child for encouraging their child to take notice of a world issue that so desperately needs concern and sensitivity. Still I wonder what went through the child’s mind throughout the experience. Captured in Hampi, Karnataka, India.
I can understand that (what you said to Geri!) oh wow... and then you have the USA that is in so much gluttony of things and complains! oh this says so much! Beautiful, Val!
thank you, geri. i didn't cry much for the poverty in india because it was almost a norm and i really try to travel the world with observant eyes, looking to document, but this woman was too much for me...
I wonder if the child will remember this scene...Val it brings back memories when I travelled overseas as a child and encountered begging for the first time in my life...I can never forget it. This is such a deeply moving shot...xxx
Hi Rosie, this girl is an Indian girl. Not sure how often she and her family travels, but she is from India, so I don't think any of this was so far from her norm...So glad you like the shot! :-)
I found the same thing in Rome when I visited years ago, old women living in cardbox cartons on the steps of churches, broke my heart, this is so very sad, makes you wonder what the child is thinking x

Oh my Val - this one image is a book on learning compassion and justice early. How profound this is.
