I like this alot! And yes, time. Weird as it may sound to some who have been through the change and I have. Stopped cold 2010 Jan. I miss the periods. Cause it felt like I was feminine .Going through menapause was torture and I was losing something. But that is part of life, part of how I guess one deals with change. Acceptance is hard with time.
I missed so many as a dancer because I was usually too thin to have them. I've put on so much weight since then so I've "normalized" but I hate them! I will not miss them! I don't mind that it's too late to have children--I had never really planned to have them and am one of those weirdos that has no desire to have children naturally. So that's fine, too. But my body falling apart as a dancer is beyond.
I hate it too. (ageing) Never thought I would. but i do. I think we tend to be harder on ourselves then others. Nice piece!
Thank you! I know--I just cannot stand that I feel like I need a nap at a certain part of the day these days. A nap?? Am I 80??? But I never give in to it! Let's not even get started on the little craggy lines...
This is a beautiful piece with lots of meaning. I can relate. My latest saying to deal with birthdays is, "I hate birthdays but not having them is not a good alternative, and besides, I love presents." Might not stop the aging but makes me smile.
This has such a haunting quality to it, Jen...And let me tell you, I completely relate to what you wrote...It really sucks that there is just no stopping time....Anyway, wonderful work!!! :)))
Thanks so much! You know, it seems we've embraced something so backwards as a society. Elderly people were respected and admired for generations past and now we're driving ourselves nuts trying to stay young. Hmmmm....All is vanity, I guess!
Wonderful thought-provoking image, Jennifer. For three or four years I 'kicked and screamed' about getting old. Then, after my last birthday began to wonder what all my fussing had been about. (I'm not saying old any more... older maybe, but not old.)
Oh well. Facts cannot be ignored. I guess you can but facts will catch up with you and sweep you in no matter what. I'm trying not to say old, because I'm not. I'm also trying not to give a toss what young people think when I don't "act my age." Society is so geared around youth so it's geared around YOU...when you're young. To feel suddenly left out is quite a shock!
Sorry to intrude but I caught that bit about acting your age and just thought I'd mention that, when I was 8-12 people always thought I was quite a bit older and always getting on to me for not acting my age. Now they think I am younger than I really am and are amazed by my maturity :P So in response to that silliness I only have to say, Who cares so long as you behave yourself. (To an extent. ;p)
I had to come back to this Jen because I didn't comment on your amazing words...if you must know, I think you read my mind, having just had a birthday I'd rather not remember to celebrate an age I'd rather not have come to just yet in a body that does not want to cooperate with my more youthful mental vision of myself - lol. Unfortunately, I'll have to learn to live with it...as my friends say, getting another year older is better than the alternative...wrinkles and all!
Thank you so much for your comments, Lianne. Happy birthday! Age is not a friend to dancers but it is for musicians, composers, writers, and artists. Experience deepens the quality of what you have to say--even if there is no one listening at the time. Funny how wisdom has to be a wine--aged to perfection. I guess I do have a positive way to look at it but I'm in the middle, trying to talk myself into the value of aging but hating it all the same. My mom says that when I'm 60 I just won't care anymore. I'll be too senile to be bothered with such things! I guess I'll see when I'm 60! I guess we have to live each day as fully as we can and in the now. You never know which day will be your last!
You know, the aging is alright when you have the right person by your side to age with you. BUt not a parrot. They live to be 100.
Well, my husband is always wonderful but I still hate it. I can't dance anymore. I hate that. HATE that. Parrots and Peter O'Toole--they'll outlive us all.
Wait! I did I misread that? Your husband in always wonderful and you hate it? You horrible Stinker. However, on the growing old together thing- I married a girl 15 years younger than me and I've told her that when she hits 36 that's the cut off point. Time for a new wife. So, I can empathize with your feelings about women growing older.
