I have come back for another visit. I need a bit of nostalgia this morning. :)
=))! AWW! You just put a big smile on my face dear friend! Spoonfish are for everyone! Glad you came to visit! =))!
Oh goody! Making someone smile is often just as lovely as making them laugh. You know that deep unstoppable happy laughter that just bubbles out and makes anyone who hears it smile in spite of themselves? I just love causing both. I am curious, do spoonfish have tea parties?
I am letting the secret out of the bag, but here goes...Spoonfish do everything...not only do the attend teaparties but host them as well (sorry, not the Tea Party variety hosted by the GOP). The y can fly at the mere thought of their feet leaving the ground, they can speak, sing, I suppose even dance, but perhaps in an ungainly way...but swim in any environment they can and do. However, while Spoonfish are adept at many things and always eager to befriend, they must be coaxed as they are not always the initiator...they sometimes are like the good natured Coyote trickster figure of the Southern Plains Indians, not malevolent, but with a sharp humor streak! Ooops! Perhaps, I've revealed too much! =))!
HA! I knew I had met Spoonfish before. An aquatic Kokopelli indeed! Did you know he will sneak in and deliberately mismatch your socks?
Perhaps you could give a future spoonfish some Kokopelli feathers? http://brasdorfirstnation.com/Gallery/albums/Steve/Kokopelli.jpg
HeHe! That's not all they mismatch! =))! Kokopelli features or accoutrements might just be the thing! I will make a note on my mental rolodex! =))! Thanks!
Passionate about fish? Lovely. Your're not only good with a camera I see... :-)
Thanks for your kind words! Love fish, YES! Work in lots of different media and modes, yes, too! =))!
Gorgeous color here. The eyes and mouth remind me of some of the Hildebrandt illustrations for Tolkien's work.
=))! Glad you like Ria! Thanks for your comment, as well! The Spoonfish (my coined term) is very important and integral part of my work over many years! Nice to have it connected to the Hildebrandt illustrations! Thank you!
He reminds me of a great many things from my childhood. (I was exposed to a lot more of my parents' culture than my own generation's.)
This is making me feel so nostalgic. I can remember hundred little childhood instances all at once from him. Does he have a name?
He is one iteration of my Magic Spoonfish! They/he are zoomorphic/anthropomorphic, are my avatar, my muse and can be/become many things! Ultimately, I do not reveal all, but enjoy that viewers of these works are prompted to connect in their own personal way with the Spoonfish! Glad you have made that connection Ria!
how is this anthropomorphic? zoomorphic i can understand, because deity can arguably inhibit any living vessel, though i see no apparent symbols of possession or inhibition... i guess im just curious as to why this work was created. to me, it appears to be only a stylized fish.
Perhaps I should have been more clear! There have been dozens of different Spoonfish works created since 1979 when I first coined the term and created the first Spoonfish! Since that time, they have taken all forms (2d and 3d) some clearly more zoomorphic, and others, clearly more anthropomorphic! Still, at other times, they could be described as being merely "stylized" as dustineparr puts it! In their larger totality, Spoonfish can, do and have been all that I, their creator have said they are. Look deeper into this gallery and you (dustineparr) will see the four works titled "Spoonfish Shaman Series" that perhaps for a sceptic, will better illustrate what I have alluded to! All best!
SPOONFISH!! CONGRATULATIONS ! I HAVE SELECTED YOUR WORK TO FEATURE AT THIS WEEK'S "PEOPLE'S CHOICE LOUNGE”! I ALWAYS LOVED THIS FISH. SO PLEASE BRING HIM QUICKLY TO THE "PEOPLE CHOICE LOUNGE". CONGRATULATION MY FRIEND!!!
Ha-ha, i'm thinking; if I met this fellow under the sea he'd probably sit me down and reveal the story of life. big STAR to you.
Such a delightful compliment Neil!! Yes he/she would, no doubt as Spoonfish possess magical powers!! Glad you like!!!
It's good to see you are still doing your art. I graduated from art school in 75 and don't draw or paint at all anymore. This is excellent!!!

Wonderful and wondering. Could be a cool patchwork cover bed, looking into my tired body. I love it!
Graphically sound Mr Jethro and Nemo doin the technicolour dreamcoat.... Good Morning from the UK... Rick
' Just keep swimming, swimming. ' ~ Dorrie in ' Finding Nemo ' - Your picture says ' I'm a fish. Colorful and pretty in my fish tank, but bored like you wouldn't believe ! ' I always see a story in your art, which is one reason why I enjoy your art so much.
Thanks so much Elizabeth, I am glad you do and also that you share what you see regarding the stories in the works! Ultimately, I wish the viewer to craft their own story for the works. Obviously, I have my own, sometimes they are as people intimate, other time very different. I like the Nemo line=))! Actually, though, this Magic Spoonfish is sizing up/ assessing/ evaluating/ apraising the human(s) who are scrutinizing it! One one level it begs the question who is appraising whom and what is the environment (that of the Spoonfish or that of the Humans)? Thanks for your reflection! Much appreciated! =))!

I love this!
Thanks Chris! This is one of my favorite children=))! The original work is now in a private collection in Montana!=))!
This fish is dope!
Does it have any relation to the illustrated childrens book? I can't recall the name but it had a similar fish.
Not to my knowledge. I coined/adapted the word Spoonfish in 1979, and began creating a number of works and series of works over the years incorporating a Spoonfish theme. I have done some illustration for some K-12 educational publications in NY state, however, none with the Spoonfish.
I love this fish! Very happy but it looks like he just noticed something off to the left that scares him a bit!
Thanks for your visit and stars Tom! Much appreciated! Yes, he is content, but he is also sizing up the viewer =)!
Love it! Love the whimsy with you fish series. You should do more!
Thanks Kevin. The Spoonfish works are my signature pieces, and they are always at or near the surface of many of my creative endeavors! More will surely follow, thanks!!
Love fish, really love this guy!
Hi Kari! Thank for visiting my gallery and awarding all the stars! It's much appreciated! Yes, this piece is one of my favorites. It's in a private collection in Montana, done on Rives BFK 22x30 inches. One of my signature Spoonfish works! I must reiterate how much I enjoyed seeing your work, lots of fine pieces! All best,
Reminds me of an old teacher of mine...Don Weller. Wonderous lines and color
Thanks for the compliment and stars Jeff! I got to tell you, your work is awesome, too many adjectives come to mind, which is a GOOD thing! all best, Jethro
the overall composition and detail on the scales is pretty awesome. you managed to both give it a sense of vibrance, as well as shading. the whole piece is really fantastic. Well done.
Thanks Santiago for your praise and stars! The concentrated liquid watercolor and acrylic medium over pen and ink is part of the reason for the vibrance in color. All best!
ah pretty great technique. the final result is outstanding. you're welcome with those stars, your work is so detailed, well composed, how could i not? =0)

The depth of subtle and soft textures on the scales is beautiful. (As well as the colors..!) The face of the fish is a beauty too, very charming.
