Description: This year the winter solstice will be on December 22, 2011. It is the start of longer days, the promise of spring, and the start of new life. While every day is to be celebrated, I love the winter solstice.

A solstice is an astronomical event that happens twice each year when the Sun’s apparent position in the sky, as viewed from Earth, reaches its northernmost or southernmost extremes. The name is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstices, the Sun stands still in declination; that is, the apparent movement of the Sun’s path north or south comes to a stop before reversing direction. Amen to that Tori - it is supposedly, according to Celtic lore, an important day for me and I don't doubt that at all. I am always so sad in the month or so before this and can feel my spirit shift after it. This is a stunning image to celebrate that hope!
