Back in the day, during WW2, they used to send illustrators out on the field to visually record what they saw. Soldiers (illustrators) had mere seconds to sketch the horrific images they saw and keep moving so as not to get caught in a line of fire. The technique they used is the process I used in this painting, all though the image being far less traumatizing than a war shot.

And yesss, the baroque pattern behind him is drawn/painted completely by hand. :)
