For me, there is nothing that matches the emiotional content of a black and white picture, whether it be traditional art or digital or...what-have-you. This is a very emotional and powerful image. Well done!

what has me also in awe is how did you go about designing the smoke .. out your head or reference photo?

It's actually ink diffusing into water, but both are fluids diffusing into another fluid. Ink has gravity where smoke rises due to heat.
